The first know europeans to land on the Americas were the Vikings about a thousand years ago. They hopped land masses (Shetland, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland) to get here over the years and stayed to get timber for use on Greenland as well as food and grapes that grow south of here wild.
There are two attractions here to cater to you're Viking based curiosity. The National Park where the archaeological site is with a reconstruction just along from the site of the main hall. And over the road is Norstead, a private attraction where they have re built the whole site and populated it with a few actors/guides in costume. Both are excellent for different reasons but at Norstead they made flat bread that you could try with jams made from the different types of local berries, mmmmmmm.
National Site... you could try on a few bits
National Site... this is the model of the whole site as it was back then.
National Site... one of the sod hut remains, there is a foot of topsoil covering the old walls build up over the last 1000 years.
National Site... reconstruction of the main space in the main hall, cosy.
-------------------
Private Site... they maid the whole hall much bigger than the other chaps but have a real fire and oven, feel a lot more realistic and there was bread and jam tasters!
Private site... The king and queen take the weight off! I could get used to this.
Private site... Panorama from the far end.
